What do employers REALLY want?

I am a student desperately seeking a job, but lately it seems all that employers want is those who are more seasoned with more bills and mortgages to pay than I, or else kids my age are getting hired because they know someone who can pull strings, and other employers want people who are willing to give a full commitment to their company.
