How can i make my hair naturally curly/nappy?

I really want afro texture hair but i have the straightest hair known to mankind. seriously, i grew my hair out to my shoulders at 14 (i'm 18 now) and it was completely straight. it didn't even come close to curling. anyway, i've wanted afro texture hair for years. i would have got dreads when iw as 14 but the idea didn't cross my mind till after i shaved it all off. anyway, straight hair to afro hair, is it possible? if so how? do i just wax my head to pull out my follicles and hope it grows back curly?
